Munich Oktoberfest: How to get cheap rooms

It is very hard to get a reasonably priced room during the Munich Oktoberfest season. You have to accept that the cheapest room rate for all hotel categories in Munich City at this time is about double the normal rate. Cheaper rates than that are almost impossible to find. Here are a few advises to make your stay as cheap as possible.

Come with a caravan and park it somewhere in Munich – of course parking should be allowed there. If you park it somewhere near a subway or S-Bahn station then you don’t need to walk that much.

Book a dorm bed on Hostelworld. I advise you to book half a year ahead which means by mid of March at the latest.

Book a room outside of Munich with booking.com. Make sure the hotel is within walking distance to an S-Bahn station that connects to the centre of Munich. I also advise you to book half a year ahead which means by mid of March at the latest.

Book a bed in Munich in a private apartment on wimdu.de. I have never tried it myself (I’m lucky to have a friend in Munich that usually lets me stay for free), but I read a report on the German newspaper stern.de that describes it as a good idea. And the web portal Wimdu has a quality management to make sure you won’t be cheated. They also have an English version available.
