What to do in Vietnam? Lots of options.

When you travel to Vietnam you will see that there are many options available. In order to see all that is recommended here you’ll need at least six weeks.

So what to see in Vietnam? All, that makes South East Asia as a whole such a good travel spot, is on offer: Wonderful beaches, cultural attractions like temples, political and cultural attractions in cities, a cultural visit with one of the many hill-tribes in the north and as much nature as you can bear in one of the nature parks of Vietnam. With all that being said, prepare to get the most useful ever Vietnam in November tips. The Vietnam travel advice is also good for the rest of the year obviously, but the best weather is from November to February in most parts of the country.

Let me also give you an unusual introduction with some hard facts about the pros and cons of Vietnam. 🙂

So why go to Vietnam?

The pros

There are some really beautiful places in Vietnam. I recall several stops on my motorbike tour from Dalat to Nha Trang, that just awed me.

Vietnam is also perfect for some serious Vietnam beach vacation. Vietnam offers beaches, that are seriously beautiful. Check below for Nha Trang, Phu Quoc island, Mui Ne and the Con Dao islands.

Best cities to visit in Vietnam? Don’t miss the two big ones Saigon and Hanoi. My personal favourite is Dalat.

The cons

Sometimes street hawkers can be annoying or almost aggressive. Being nice doesn’t work with them. Stand your ground and show them, that you can’t be played with.

Vietnam bus scam concerning overnight tourist buses: Well, I just used one once. If you’re taller than 1.75 metres you won’t fit in the bunk and the bus stopped before reaching the terminal bus station forcing us all to take some tuktuks – they were “miraculously” waiting there – for a little extra cash.

Just don’t take the negative experiences you will have too seriously and you will have a good time. Vietnam is pretty safe to travel and there is much to explore as you will see below.

Dalat

Dalat is one of the best places to visit in Vietnam and you can only fall in love with it. It is peaceful and a bit secluded up in the mountains or hills. Many cafés invite you to have a little joyful break from whatever you were doing. And it is surrounded by incredibly beautiful landscapes. Most people go there to get in touch with someone from Easy Riders tours. This tour will bring you to interesting places you would never have seen otherwise by motorbike. How to get there for your travel planning

Take the bus from Saigon. Most tourist buses depart on De Tham road. This street is part of the Saigon “Backpacker-district”, where lots of Western tourists stay.

From the Vietnam resorts, you could choose to stay in Dalat, this hotel is close to all main landmarks and attractions, but yet surrounded by a lot of greenery, revealing magnificent mountain views. Halong Bay

Many people don’t like Halong Bay, because they say, it is too crowded. I feel, it is one of the more wonderful things to do in Vietnam. I could still enjoy the beauty of the ocean bay and the many small islands. All just a question of your perspective. It truly feels like the ultimate paradise on earth with stunning views everywhere. Embark on your boat, listen to your tour guide, relax, explore the flowstone cave, go canoeing and snorkelling and make lots of beautiful photos to make your friends and family back home jealous. How to get there for your travel planning

The best is to use Hanoi as a base and depart from there. Book at least a two day tour. Make sure to compare the prices, as there are big differences. Hostels – it needn’t be the one where you stay – usually offer the cheapest prices, and tourist information centres the most expensive ones. You won’t get a better tour by paying more.

If it is your thing, buy local handicrafts. Go on a hike to explore the surroundings of Sapa. Book a local tour, that lets you enjoy one or two nights in a home-stay with locals. How to get there for your travel planning

Take an overnight train from Hanoi train station to Lao Cai, from there take the bus to Sapa. The tickets should be bought in Hanoi several days in advance at the Tran Quy Cap-entrance of Hanoi train station or in a travel office with a surcharge. Better buy it yourself at the train station to avoid being scammed. Tip: Buy the return-ticket before you go on your Halong Bay trip.

Mekong Delta

The Mekong Delta – It is simply not allowed to travel to Vietnam and miss this one! Got it? 🙂 – It hosts a lot of Vietnam attractions and it just fascinates to be in a boat watching all the action that is going on. It is one of the last floating markets, where real business is still done and it’s not just there for tourists. Then there are many places to explore to see how rice paper, puffed rice, coconut candy and other specialities are manufactured. The local markets on land are also an interesting thing to witness. The easiest is to book a one or two day tour in one of the many travel offices in the Saigon “backpacker district” at De Tham or Bui Vien street in Saigon. But be warned: Those usually are big bus tours, that first drive around in Saigon for one hour to pick up everybody.

Still wondering what to do in Vietnam? Mui Ne fishing village

Mui Ne lies in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta at the ocean. Besides just strolling around in the fishing village and watching all the fishermen doing their business you should rent a motorbike, as that gives you more flexibility. Also you should get up early to visit markets and enjoy beautiful sunrises. Then there is a place called fairy stream (Suoi Tien), that looks like out of this world.

The sand dunes of Mui Ne

Are you looking for perfect holiday pictures or, better, just want to feel the simplicity and beauty of existence? One of the best things to do in Vietnam are the Mui Ne sand dunes. Around Mui Ne there is an area with red sand dunes and, a bit further out, with white dunes. Best rent a motorbike or bicycle and start exploring the area.

How to get there for your travel planning

You can reach Mui Ne – actually the greater area is called Phan Thiet – by bus or by train from Saigon in 4 to 6 hours depending on traffic. The train is slower, but more comfortable.

Saigon and around Saigon

Saigon (Ho Chi Minh city)

Why? Well, maybe you do not think of Saigon when you are looking for the best places to visit in Vietnam, yet this bustling city just fascinates people and offers many attractions to be seen.

The number one experience to me is witnessing the traffic during the evening rush hour. Endless masses of scooters make their way through the streets.

What to do in Ho Chi Minh: The South Vietnamese Presidential palace – also known as the reunification palace – and the Anti War-museum – further known as the war remnants museum – shouldn’t be missed either. If you want to see a real mosque go to the central mosque and don’t miss to eat at Quan An Ngon at 160 Pasteur street. It is a mid-range priced open air food court with all Vietnamese specialities available. Naturally, these are by far not all things to do in Saigon (officially called Ho Chi Minh city). How to get there for your travel planning

From Bangkok take a flight to Ho Chi Minh city, or from Phnom Penh, Cambodia, take the bus. Then you can witness the Mekong ferry and lots of Cambodians and Vietnamese transporting almost everything imaginable and unimaginable on their motorbikes. If you’re on reverse from Ho Chi Minh to Phnom Penh you also have both these options. In Phnom Penh it is easy to get a Vietnam visa, if you’d like to get it on the road. I really recommend you the bus journey, especially if it’s your first time in South East Asia.

In Saigon: War remnants museum

The War Remnants Museum in Saigon is among the most famous historical places to visit in the city. It lies in district three and shows exhibits from the devastating American phase of the Vietnam War from 1961 to 1975. The museum features several buildings, that store the military equipment used and photographs of the terrible consequences of the napalm and phosphorous bombs known as Agent Orange. The horrible effects of the war on the next generations are also shown.

It is not a big museum and can be explored in one to two hours. The captions on the exhibits are written in English and in Vietnamese. The place is not suitable for kids, as most of the exhibits are disturbing.

How to get there for your travel planning

The War Remnants Museum is located at the corner between Le Quy Don St. and Vo Van Tan St. in district three. You can reach the place with a taxi or motorbike, as well as with bus no. 28 from the Ben Thanh Bus Station. The museum is open every day from 8:00 to 11:45 am and 1:30 to 4:45 pm and has an entrance fee.

Near Saigon: Cu Chi tunnels

The Cu Chi tunnels are another important landmark near Saigon that shouldn’t be missed. They were dug by the communist guerilla troops also known as Vietcong to combat the South Vietnamese and the American forces, which were better supplied. They dug thousands of miles of tunnels such as the ones under Cu Chi north-west of Saigon. These tunnels were used to house troops, transport the supplies and to organize surprise attacks. Thanks to them the Viet Cong troops managed to disappear fast and safe. In order to fight these troops, the American and South Vietnamese forces trained soldiers known as “tunnel rats”. Today the Cu Chi honeycomb tunnels are part of the Vietnam War memorial park and a popular place for tourists.

You can reach the Cu Chi tunnels by going to the Ben Thanh bus station located opposite the Ben Thanh market. Then you can hop on the buses with numbers 13 or 79. Once at the Cu Chi tunnels expect to pay an entrance fee of approx. 90 000 dong.

Near Saigon: Cao Dai temple

When you travel to Vietnam you could pay the Cao Dai temple a visit. It is the main temple of the Cao Dai religion, which is a mix of Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism. The temple’s main feature is the divine eye. You can go up on a balcony and observe one of the four daily masses.

One of the reasons, why the temple is visited by many tourists, is, that tours from Saigon to the temple are offered in combination with visiting the Cu Chi tunnels along the way.
If you’d like to stay in the area for longer, take a minibus to Tay Ninh, the city in which the temple is located, from the An Soung bus station.

Recommended local tours in and around Tay Ninh, the city, in which the Cao Dai temple is located

The Cao Dai Temple and Cu Chi Tunnels Combination Day Tour is done with an English speaking live guide and starts with picking you up from your hotel in Ho Chi Min City. Then you’ll visit the Cao Dai Temple and are able to observe an authentic Caodaist religious ceremony. After that the guide leads you to the historical Cu Chi Tunnels some 60 km away from the city where you are able to explore many historical landmarks. Hoi An ancient town

Hoi An is destined to impress you with its 2000 years of history under a multitude of kingdoms. The main attraction is its beautiful old town and number in the old town is the visit of the Japanese bridge. If you don’t like to tick off your list of attractions, Hoi An is perfect for you as there are plenty of things to do in this Vietnamese city. On the first day just stroll around without any list and discover, what catches your eye, be it old houses, temples or lovely looking shops or restaurants. Make a lot of breaks in one of the many restaurants. On the second day make a tour to the My Son temple complex and on the way back explore attractions in Hoi An, that you might have missed on day one. Hoi An can be reached from Nha Trang by night bus (12 hours) or from Hue (4 hours). Alternatively, you can take a train to Danang and from there get a bus to Hoi An (one hour).

My Son temples near Hoi An

The My Son temple ruins near Hoi An undoubtedly are one of the best places to visit in Vietnam. They belong to the big temple complexes like Angkor Wat or Borobudur, but unfortunately are in much worse condition. Some of the temples were destroyed as recently as in the Vietnam war. They belonged to the Cham empire and were built in the thirteenth century. Hanoi old quarter

Among the many things to do in Vietnam don’t forget to include an extended stroll through Hanoi’s old quarter. Hanoi offers you an old quarter with lots of old French colonial buildings and food quite different from the South. The old quarter with its mix of temples, shops, restaurants and nightlife is good for a stroll throughout the day. The attractions in the old quarter, that you should visit, are the Hoan Kiem Lake, the Opera House and the water puppet theatre.

Hanoi has some weird clubs. I have no idea, whether they still exist or not, as my story is from December 2010. I entered this club, that was huge and sat down on a cushioned bench with a table in front. Then came the manager and asked, if I want a lady sitting next to me, which I refused. Then a show started. It was like an opulent eighties TV show with some dancing, legs swinging and nice to watch. I also looked around and saw some other gentlemen talking with women. But it all was in a very decent style, no flirting or touching involved. I guess, that’s Hanoi style seedy nightlife. It was an experience. If it’s still on, give it a try. I found it amusing and refreshing compared to the usual nightlife experiences.

Imperial citadel of Thang Long, Hanoi

The Thang Long citadel served as the government centre of Vietnam for 13 centuries. It’s interesting to walk through the area, but don’t expect too much. You can have a look at the gates, a stone fortress and some bunkers used in the Vietnam war. The area is a nice thing to do in Vietnam for a relaxed stroll without all the traffic related stress.

Ho Chi Minh’s mausoleum, Hanoi

Ho Chi Minh, the founder of the communist Vietnam state lies buried in there. The square in front of the mausoleum is the place, where Ho Chi Minh declared the independence of Vietnam, for which Vietnam had to fight the following 30 years. If you really want to visit the mausoleum, be early, as the queue can get long. The mausoleum is only open in the morning.

Hoan Kiem lake, Hanoi

Hoan Kiem lake is just a small lake adjacent to the old quarter of Hanoi. What makes it special is the legend connected with it of a giant turtle, that surfaced and took the sword of the emperor 500 years ago. Indeed there was a giant turtle living in the lake. Hoa Lo Prison (Hanoi Hilton)

The most famous inmate of this prison was current US senator John Mc Cain, whose plane was shot down over Hanoi during Vietnam war. Before those times it was used by the French to imprison and execute Vietnamese revolutionaries with one of those infamous Guillotines.

Or you can reach Hanoi by train or bus from just about everywhere in Vietnam.

Places to visit in Hue

Imperial citadel and in the city

One of the must see places in Vietnam, the imperial citadel in Hue, is work in progress. You could compare it to the forbidden city in Beijing, but not as well restored and not as many side palaces besides the main one. But the entry gate is massive and impressive.

From 1802 to the independence in 1945 Hue was the capital of Vietnam and Hue the imperial city with the citadel having a similar purpose and design as the forbidden city in Beijing.

Thien Mu Pagoda, Hue

The Thien Mu Pagoda is three kilometres from the Hue citadel and the tallest pagoda of Vietnam. A temple was first constructed in 1601 and extended and changed several times. The actual Pagoda was built in 1844.

You can drive through the landscapes near the border an try to imagine, that on some spots no plant grew for up to 20 years after the war. Phu Quoc island

The Phu Quoc island is just 2 square kilometres smaller than Phuket, but with much less people. That might change however as it has an airport now just as Phuket. The island lies in the ocean at the Cambodian/Vietnamese border and still offers its visitors a relaxed atmosphere. The long beach is – as its name gives away – the longest beach of the island and in the evening the sunsets here seem to be spectacular. Along the beach there are many good accommodation options available.

Since the island is quite big, you can do my favourite thing. Rent a motorbike and explore it. This feeling of freedom on the motorbike. I love it, do you? You can also make your diving certificate here, go on a jungle tour in the huge Phu Quoc national park, visit the fish sauce factory – that is, if you can stand the smell – or just be lazy at the beach the whole day. Whatever you like most.

You can fly in from Saigon with Vietnam airlines and then take a taxi to your hotel or get a combined bus and boat ticket to the island from any travel agency in Saigon. From the pier you can then take a taxi to your hotel. The conditions on the boat can sometimes be a bit rough when the sea is not so calm. It’s calmest during high season from November to February.

Take the bus from 272 De Tham road – that is, where most tourist buses depart – to Dalat and tell the driver, you need to get out at the Cat Tien National park. Health issues

Health issues in Vietnam depend on the location you plan to visit. As a rule, the major cities are generally not high risk places and offer good living conditions and facilities. The rural areas however require you to have “travel to Vietnam vaccinations”, although serious illnesses are rare and the injuries hardly ever are life-threatening.

If it makes you feels safer, take a personal medical kit with you. I never do, as it is usually not a problem to find pharmacies, that sell these things in Vietnam as well, in case I would need them.

Is Vietnam safe?

If you are planning a trip to Vietnam you are most probably wondering, whether it is safe to travel to Vietnam? Vietnam is a considered as relatively safe country, even for women solo travellers. Keeping in mind the recent history of the country and the great number of tourists, foreigners receive a warm welcome. Yet, petty crime is an issue, mainly the small-scale one, but it can be avoided by applying some common sense measures.

Vietnam tourism safety and behaviour in public

Vietnam safety and behaviour is often a matter of being careful. What does this mean?
Do not wear expensive jewellery or a camera around your neck.
When on a motorbike taxi keep your bag out of display.
Do not wear shorts, skirts and other revealing clothes in temples and pagodas.
Physical displaying of affection (e.g. kissing in public) should be avoided.
Stay polite and try not lose your temper if possible.

Vietnam travel scams

Be extra careful of the Nha Trang railway station which connects Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City. If possible get a soft-sleeper with 4 berths by booking your ticket yourself – not via an agent – and well in advance. If you act through an agent, there is a high risk that he will buy you a hard-sleeper with 6 berths and you will find that out as you board and will not be able to do anything about it. Note that this is one of the most common scams in Vietnam.

And keep the bus scam in mind, that I mentioned at the top of this article in the introduction.

Best time of year to visit Vietnam

It is ok to visit Vietnam the whole year. From December to March it’s best in the low areas, as it is not too hot. But in the mountains it can get very cold then. So if you’re headed for the mountains in the North, e.g. Sapa, better visit from May to August.

The best time to travel to Vietnam is associated with the tropical monsoon climate in Vietnam and especially with the monsoon season in Vietnam – the south-western monsoon from May to September and the north-eastern monsoon from October to April. Know, that the weather in Saigon varies, but the temperatures in the south are almost the same throughout the year whereas in the north they have distinct variations.

Weather in Vietnam – seasons & months

From December to late April or May southern Vietnam is in its dry season, which means mostly sunshine and not much rain. From May through to November there is rainy season in the southern part of the country. From November through January it is the best Saigon weather for travelling in that part of the country.

The rainy season in the central coast of Vietnam lasts from November to December. From August to November the central coast of the country is most likely to be hit by typhoons, which means torrential rain and strong winds.

The weather in Hanoi and Halong bay and generally in northern Vietnam has two main seasons: Hot with sporadic rain from April to September and cool with some chilly wind from October to March.

As you see, Vietnam weather is a complicated matter and there is no particular time that can be recommended.

However, spring – March and April and autumn – September to December – are considered the best time of year to go to Vietnam. That is also the best time to go to Vietnam if you plan to take one of those long tours and see the entire country.
