Queensland, or the Sunshine State, as it’s rightfully called, is blessed with many incredible Australian tourist attractions for adventurers travelling alone. Here some suggestions of the top 5 things do to in Queensland when you organise your travel.

Great Barrier Reef Australia

The Great Barrier Reef is a natural marvel and one of the amazing places in Queensland, that you can’t miss. You have to see it to really believe it. As the largest coral reef system in the world, it stretches over 2000 kilometres along the coast of Queensland, truly one of the most beautiful places in Queensland.

You can visit this remarkable underwater treasure through one of the gateway towns. Cairns is the main entry point offering many tours, from not-so-expensive options to luxury alternatives. Other popular launching pads include Port Douglas, Townsville as well as Arlie Beach, from which you can take trips to the spectacular Whitsunday Islands.
The best way to explore the reef is to go snorkelling and diving on boat excursions. Get up close and personal with the enchanting coral, variety of tropical fish, and marine life.

Brisbane

Asking yourself, what you can do in Queensland, visiting the capital of the Sunshine State, Brisbane, certainly is not wrong. As one of the cities to visit in Australia Brisbane has many great things to do and places to see. If you love culture and art, the city has plenty of museums, art galleries and historical buildings you can check out, including the Queensland Cultural Centre, Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA), and the Parliament House. Attending a theatrical performance at the Powerhouse can be a real treat. If shopping tickles your fancy, head to Queen Street Mall. Make time for the Royal Botanic Gardens and enjoy the nature, fine dining and cultural attractions along the Southbank Parklands. You can also climb the heritage-listed Story Bridge to get sky-high views of the city and river.

You can reach Brisbane by its airport (BNE) and then take the air-train to different stops in the city centre. Alternatively you can land at the Goldcoast airport (OOL), the local hub for no-frills airlines, and then take a bus to Brisbane. The bus should take 1.5 hours.

Daintree Rainforest

One more of the Queensland must see places is this spectacular natural wonderland: The Daintree Rainforest in northern Queensland is listed as a World Heritage Site and is the continent’s largest rainforest and hence also a must see in Australia. You’ll come across all sorts of animal species here, including a variety of reptile, marsupial, frog, bat, native bird and butterfly species. There’s so much to see and do for nature lovers, from going on a boat tour to see the crocodiles in their natural habitat to horse riding, going on an awesome hike in the wilderness or visiting an animal sanctuary.

To reach this top place to visit in Queensland it would be best, if you have a rental car, as that is the easiest way to reach Daintree National Park. Otherwise there are buses from Cairns and Port Douglas to Cape Tribulation, the entry point to the park, where tours can be booked.

Fraser Island

Another must do in Queensland, and also a valuable tourist attraction for entire Australia, is Fraser island. It is just off the coast and close to Hervey Bay, an incredible refuge and also, the world’s biggest sand island. Come here to relax and enjoy the beautiful beaches, stretching over 120 kilometres, which means you can take your pick. This island also has lovely freshwater lakes as well as fantastic natural rainforests that behold some rare fauna and flora. You can go swimming, fishing, snorkelling and scuba diving around wrecks, or explore the island or a few days by hiring a 4WD. If you’re interested in staying at a resort, there’s one on the western side of Fraser Island.

Australia Zoo

What is there to do in Australia? Plus one of the must see places to see in Queensland? Well, who doesn’t love an awesome zoo, especially one that always has live shows throughout the day? Made famous by Australia’s beloved crocodile hunter, the late Steve Irwin, Australia Zoo is home to more than 1000 animals. So it certainly is one of the best places to see in Queensland. The highlights of your day will be the Crocoseum, where you get to see crocodiles inhabiting clear water ponds with a spectacular live show, as well as the Tiger Temple, where you’ll get the opportunity to get up close with the charming Big Cats. Meet the elephants and feed them at the Elephantasia exhibit. The keepers also wander around the zoo with the wildlife, so be prepared for an awesome meet-and-greet with koalas, snakes, camels and other friendly animals.

The closest bigger city is Sunshine Coast. Possibly there are buses from there, but I can’t confirm. The best way to visit, is with your own transport, e.g. a rental car.

A less costly island to be visited is Ko Lanta in South Thailand.
