After reading this text you hopefully will no longer have to wonder, what to do in Sydney. If you missed something, just tell everyone in a comment. Thanks.

Blue Mountains day trip

Visit the Blue Mountains to experience the feeling you get when you look into the far reaches of the jungle from the edge of a cliff.

The Blue Mountains are to the west of Sydney. What left the most lasting impression on me was the view one has from the high plateau down into the lower lying jungle. It is at its most beautiful when it is a little overcast; since it is then that the clouds’ outlines are visible on top of the forest. There are several viewing platforms.
From the visitors’ centre you can descend via cable car or rack rail and learn more about the jungle and a disused mine on an educational trail.

How to get there for your travel planning

Drive into the Blue Mountains in a rental car or book a daytrip from Sydney. On the way to the visitors’ centre there is an information centre where they are happy to help you with your selection of destinations for the daytrips.

Australian Wildlife

Do you want to get a little closer to many of the animals associated with Australia? You also didn’t rent a car?

For those without a rental car or those who don’t fancy a day excursion, the Sydney Aquarium and the associated Sydney Wildlife World offer two more Sydney things to do as a viable alternative. The aquarium impresses with an underwater tunnel, which allows an all-round view of the animals.

Once you have seen both those attractions, stroll along the shoreline path. This part of Sydney is called Darling Harbour . There are many restaurants at Darling Harbour offering you a variety of culinary experiences and there also are good nightlife choices in the area. If you would like to speed in the basin surrounding Sydney on a jet-boat – the start terminal is at Darling Harbour.

For a daytrip visit Featherdale Wildlife Park or Taronga Zoo.

How to get there for your travel planning

Sydney Acquarium: Get to Wynyard Station. From there walk down the hill and turn left.

Taronga-Zoo: Take the ferry from the Circular Quay.

It’s best to visit Featherdale Wildlife Park by car.

From the Opera House to Harbour Bridge

If you do this tour on foot, you’ll see most of downtown Sydney’s attractions.

Sydney’s Opera House is known to everyone as one of the world’s architectural landmarks. I recommend you a guided Sydney opera house tour if you’re into architecture. Spending some time in the square in front of the opera is definitely worth your while, since high quality artistic performances often take place there. Right next to it are the Botanical Gardens, which invite the visitor to take a leisurely stroll. The park contains some beautiful and old trees, which exude something magical.

Afterwards, follow the Circular Quay in the direction of “The Rocks” district. Along the water there you’ll find the more classical touristy street performances. A couple of blocks further back are some interesting buildings. Just walk in and be amazed by what you find in the inner courtyards.

The Rocks was the first settlement in Sydney. Today it’s filled with countless restaurants, cafés, bars and shops that invite you to linger. No experience of Sydney would be complete without a walk across the Harbour Bridge. For the brave ones and those blessed with enough money, there’s the Sydney harbour bridge climb tour that allows you to securely walk the Sydney harbour bridge or climb the iron arches.

How to get there for your travel planning

All attractions in downtown Sydney can be reached from the Circular Quay train station.

Manly

Manly is where some of the Australian celebrities live and it’s quite a beautiful place. The best way to get to Manly is by ferry. Once there you should enjoy the beach (take your swimming gear). Along the beach there are countless restaurants with great offers. If you have a rental car, you may end up missing the ferry crossing, but instead you get the chance to visit Sydney Harbour National Park and enjoy the beautiful view.

How to get there for your travel planning

The ferry to Manly leaves the Circular Quay at least once per hour.

Sydney Tower

For everyone, except those with a fear of heights, a one of the recommended Sydney things to do is to visit the Sydney Tower. In clear weather the best time to visit is an hour before sunset so that you can take good pictures. Anyone who is serious about good pictures should get there early for a good spot.

How to get there for your travel planning

In this case, for once, I would rather not give any directions. Just walk from the centre, following your inner compass, to the tower until you have hit upon the right street. 🙂

What else?

Bondi Beach

Is a popular meeting place for sun lovers in a bay southeast of the centre.
Sports fans shouldn’t miss the Olympic Park, where the Olympic Games of 2000 took place.

Parramatta

Is a district west of Sydney and the second oldest European settlement in Australia. From the Circular Quay the Rivercat ferry will get you there in the most relaxed fashion.

Chinatown

There’s also a Chinatown in Sydney. In addition to culinary exploits you can go on a shopping spree or get an acupuncture treatment, etc. Chinatown begins just above Darling Harbour on the downtown side.

I will be spending Christmas in Sydney and can’t wait to get there! Definitely on my list is Bondi beach and a climb to the top of Sydney bridge to conquer my fear of heights.
