Avoid the 150 Baht ATM fee
LAST UPDATE December 18, 2012
This fee for all Thailand tourists using an ATM is a real nuisance.
These banks in Bangkok don't charge this fee:
Easiest one to reach in Bangkok --> Citibank Asok branch: Soi Sukumvhit 21 at the beginning, Bangkok
How to get there: Take the sky-train/BTS to “Asok” and follow the signs to the Citibank. It is just opposite the street from the Terminal 21 shopping center, easy to find.
Citibank Centralworld branch: CentralWorld, Thanon Rama I, Bangkok
How to get there: Take the sky-train/BTS to “Chit Lom” and follow the signs to Centralworld. Seen from the skytrain footpath it is on the 4th floor in the right wing of Centralworld in the back close to the Isetan department store entrance.
HSBC Silom branch: Thanon Rama 4 opposite Lumpini Park, Bangkok
How to get there: Take the sky-train/BTS to “Sala Daeng”, walk back to the entrance of the subway/MRT “Silom” but take the exit instead of entering the MRT. Or take the MRT/subway to “Silom” and exit to Thanon Rama 4. Walk into the Thanon Rama IV. You can see the HSBC sign on the skyscraper from far. After 500 metres you find the branch on your right.
Citibank Silom branch: Thanon Silom, Bangkok
How to get there:Take the sky-train/BTS to “Sala Daeng” or the MRT/subway to "Silom" and take the exit into Silom road. Walk to the opposite direction than the Lumphini park. It is after 300 metres on your left in the united center building.
Banks with ATMs in all Thailand:
The Aeon-Bank doesn't charge the fee either (I received the tip from Thomas, thanks!):
Here is their ATM search page for Thailand.
Another big plus with HSBC and Citibank is, that you can withdraw more than the usual 20'000 Baht at once, which is useful if you want to pay your tailor or someone else in cash. I always withdraw 30'000 per transaction.
If you know more banks, that don't charge the fee, please let me know in the comment or by mail, facebook or tweet.
Dear Brian,
I'm a Swiss citizen and my card was issued by the Swiss post bank. My card is called post card and the institute calls itself Postfinance. As far as I know European postbanks founded an organisation to enable international ATM withdrawals with this Visa-Plus debit system. And the cool thing is, that really a lot of ATMs worldwide support Plus.
My account is retail and I withdraw 1000 CHF, which corresponds to 32'000 Baht at a time. Like this I don't have to visit the ATM too often.
Thank you for the additional info you gave and kind regards

Thank you, too, Charles.
I think I'll be happy with HSBC. Dealing with any bank in the US is troublesome--even though I'm a US citizen. The regulations are a nightmare. I'll keep you posted. -
Dear Brian,
Thank you for your good input. I can confirm, that HSBC still has the Lumphini location (as described in the article here above), at least I didn't hear anything else. The location in Thong Lo was closed a while ago. Next time I'm in the area I'll walk by to check myself whether they're still there.
You mention the Plus system. Which bank do you use? Is it a commercial or retail account? I have both commercial and retail accounts for Wells Fargo, and I shall close the accounts in time. Wells Fargo is terrible for international transactions: Their customer service reps are uninformed, they are not an international bank--US only, wire transfers are only allowed if one visits a US branch, and the ATM withdrawal amount is abysmally low. $300 US though the ATM only allows me a bit over $200. And there is the 150 withdrawal fee tacked on.
I was using my brokerage account ATM to make withdrawals, but they canceled my account because I am in Thailand. I now have a new broker, but they don't offer an ATM card.
I just opened an HSBC account in Hong Kong, and it's better on every level. A word to the wise: Do not visit HSBC at the Hong Kong airport to open a new account. They will talk your ear off and ask for documentation that you cannot provide. They are paranoid of new accounts. Go into Kowloon or Causeway Bay. The service is better. No monkey business. You gots the cash and the ids; you gets the account. -

Regarding the Citibank Asok I can confirm, that I am still noch charged the fee of 150 Baht. I'm using the "Plus"-system. Here is a link, if you don't know, what it means: http://www.visadps.com/products/visa_plus_atm_network.html?it=l2|/products/visa_debit_card.html|Visa/Plus%20ATM%20Network
Next time I'll use my Maestro/Cirrus card to find out, if it works fine with this one as well. -

HSBC is no longer in Thailand. I think the Thai banks kicked them out because they offered too many free services. Can anyone confirm that there are HSBC ATMs remaining in Thailand?
Maybe it's time to move to Hong Kong. These greedy Thai banks have me miffed.
Actually yesterday I drove by the HSBC building. I did some research, and HSBC relationship with Thailand has been very good over the past 120+ years. It appears they have ATMs across from Lumpini Park on Rama IV, but this is the only location in the kingdom. And it appears they are still doing commercial business in Thailand. One can still set up a business account with them.
HSBC will keep me in Thailand. I think they have excellent service, and Citibank is miles behind them. -

Hello Graham,
I use those ATMs all the time, always withdraw 30'000 Baht at once and never got charged the fee. Should this have changed I will take it off the list in this article.
I'll let you and all the readers know, if it would be the case.
My last withdrawal just 2 weeks ago also was without the 150 Baht fee.
Kind regards, Charles
yesterday I tried to use my Capital One Money Market Card (no visa emblem on front, just Cirrus logo on back) in the Citibank branch mentioned in this article (adjacent Terminal 21) and it notified me that there would be a 150 baht fee :-(
Anyone else tried that ATM? It didn't seem to be a "no fee" ATM for me.
-
I confirm, no charge in Aeon Bank; in Chiang Mai, there's one in Airport Mall, also one at Tesco, the one near Lanna
